“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
When you're looking to add a pet to your life, consider adopting a homeless animal from our shelter. Whether you want a puppy, mature dog, cat or kitten, our shelter has a great selection of animals - all screened for good health and behavior. We even help by spaying and neutering the pet as part of your adoption fee.
The Rock Island County Animal Care and Control Shelter believes that every dog and every cat is a living, feeling being who, more often than not, would make a wonderful companion if given a chance. We strive to increase those chances through our pet adoption services and support of companion-animal sterilization.
Pets available for adoption come to the shelter after being picked up as strays, turned in by residents, or surrendered by their owners for a variety of reasons. If no owner comes forward to reclaim their pet after seven (7) days, the animal is evaluated for adoption. If adoptable, the pet is processed and moved to the adoption floor. If the pet is not adoptable, the animal would be humanely euthanized.
NOTE: Owned pets are accepted by the shelter for a $45.00 release fee and must also be evaluated for adoption.

Choosing a Pet for Adoption:
Every adoptable pet can provide you with boundless love and companionship, and every pet certainly deserves a lifelong home. But some pets are better for you and your lifestyle than others. That's why you should take the time to make a thoughtful choice. After all, you're choosing a pet that is likely to be with you for ten (10) to fifteen (15) years—or longer. Select the right pet, and you and your new companion will enjoy those years to the fullest. First become knowledgeable about what kind of animal you want and what it takes to be a responsible pet caregiver.
You should be willing to spend at least an hour or two (2) looking at our adoptable pets. If you find a pet that interests you, spend some time getting acquainted before making your final decision.
Once you've decided on a pet and are ready to adopt, simply complete the adoption and registration process, pay the adoption fee and you and your new best friend are on your way!
